 Egg Cryopreservation

During the last years, the technique of the egg freezing has improved  with very good results during the thawing process. Thus, it became widely available to patients who desire to freeze their eggs.

There are numerous reasons why a woman would like to cryopreserve her eggs.

First of all, there might be medical reasons for fertility preservation. Women with cancer who are going to be treated with chemotherapy are very likely to loose the ovarian function. There are also other medical conditions which may result in reduced ovarian reserve.

The most common reason though for oocyte cryopreservation is social. It is well known that fertility declines dramatically after the age of 40. At the same time, nowadays women delay childbearing either because they cannot find the right partner or they want to pursue their career.

What should I do in order to freeze my eggs?

You will be evaluated  and then you will receive injectable medicines in order to stimulate your ovaries. The goal is to make them produce as many eggs as possible. This part is similar with IVF treatment. The duration of the treatment varies from 10 to 20 days. At the end of the treatment, you will be given sedation and the eggs are retrieved through the vagina under ultrasound guidance. After that the embryologist receives the eggs and starts the process of freezing (vitrification). The eggs can be preserved for many years, till you decide to build your family.
